PP geotextile is an important high-performance geosynthetic material, which plays an important role in the construction of water conservancy, hazardous waste landfill, tailings reservoir, airport, high-speed rail and other projects.
Case Analysis
- Location – Jordan
- Product – 500g PP Geotextile Mat
- Project – Landfill
Issue
In October 2021, BPM received an email inquiry from a project contracting company in Jordan. According to the content of the email and the attached project information, after analyzing the technical parameters of the product, BPM’s technical department concluded that the project needs to use 500g/m2 polypropylene (PP) non-woven geotextile.
According to the project information, the project is a waste disposal project, which is used to deal with the daily domestic waste generated by nearby cities. The use of polypropylene (PP) non-woven geotextiles in the project is to play an isolation and filtration role in the landfill.
Solution
To ensure good construction quality control of non-woven PP geotextile mats, two aspects need to be considered: raw material quality control and construction process control.
-
Raw Material Quality Control:
- Verify that the supplier has a certificate of conformity for the product.
- Ensure that the material properties and specifications meet the required standards.
- Perform quality inspections on the material, including elongation at break, tensile strength at break, burst strength CBR, tear strength, and permeability coefficient.
- Thoroughly inspect each index of the material at the quality inspection center until it passes the inspection.
-
Construction Process Control:
- Ensure that the materials used in the construction process are in line with the design and can fulfill their intended roles. This includes meeting specified criteria such as elongation at break, tensile strength at break, burst strength CBR, tear strength, and permeability coefficient.
- Follow the laying measures designed by the engineer during the construction process.
Advantage
-
High tensile strength
High tensile strength, under the same gram weight, the longitudinal and transverse tensile forces are higher than other needle punched non-woven fabrics.
-
Good elongation
The geotextile has good elongation under a certain stress, so that the geotextile can adapt to the uneven base.
-
Good drainage performance and vertical permeability
Due to the large thickness of the non-woven geotextile and the needling reinforcement, it has good plane drainage performance and vertical permeability.
-
Good anti-ultraviolet performance
Non-woven PET geotextile has good anti-ultraviolet radiation performance, ensuring long service life.
-
Good corrosion resistance
Non-woven geotextiles are resistant to different chemical substances such as acid and alkali, gasoline, diesel in the soil.
-
Good anti-friction performance
The friction coefficient of the geotextile is higher than that of another conventional geotextile, and it is not easy to fluff and damage.
-
Good creep resistance
Nonwoven geotextiles have good creep resistance and long-lasting functionality.
The application of PP geotextile mat in other projects
PP geotextile mats have a wide range of applications in various projects due to their excellent properties and versatility. Here are some common applications of PP geotextile mats in different projects:
-
Road and Pavement Construction:
- Separation: PP geotextile mats are used to separate different layers of soils, preventing intermixing and maintaining the stability of the road structure.
- Filtration and Drainage: Geotextiles allow water to pass through while preventing the migration of fine particles, ensuring effective drainage and preventing clogging of the pavement layers.
- Reinforcement: Geotextiles can be used to improve the tensile strength and stability of road bases and subgrades.
-
Erosion Control and Slope Stabilization:
- Erosion Control: PP geotextile mats can be used to control soil erosion on slopes, embankments, and riverbanks by stabilizing the soil and preventing surface runoff.
- Slope Stabilization: Geotextiles can reinforce and stabilize slopes, preventing landslides and erosion.
-
Landfill and Environmental Protection:
- Liner Systems: PP geotextile mats are used as part of liner systems in landfills to prevent the leakage of contaminants into the surrounding environment.
- Drainage and Filtration: Geotextiles are used to facilitate proper drainage and filtration within landfill systems, promoting the efficient management of leachate and gases.
-
Coastal and Hydraulic Engineering:
- Shoreline Protection: PP geotextile mats can be used for coastal erosion control and protection of shorelines against wave action.
- Dewatering and Filtration: Geotextiles are used in hydraulic engineering projects to facilitate dewatering and filtration processes, such as in the construction of retaining walls, dams, and reservoirs.
-
Agriculture and Landscaping:
- Weed Control: PP geotextile mats can be used as weed barriers in agricultural fields and landscaping projects, reducing the need for herbicides and maintaining a clean and weed-free environment.
- Soil Stabilization: Geotextiles help stabilize soil, preventing erosion and maintaining optimal growing conditions for plants and vegetation.
